Exploring Gothenburg
A hunt on-line last night, and I stumble across 10 must do's in Gothenburg, and the thing that really stands out is a trip out to the archipelago, which are bunch of islands just off the mainland.
After a bit of reading about how to get there; turns out, if you're in Gothenburg, it's well worth getting the Västtrafik To Go app - This is for all of their public transport, including the trams, buses and the ferry... And was just ~£8.50 for a day pass - such a bargain!!
And If you put your destination in the app, it'll plan all the transport you need to take, including any walking between stops... and provides timings and links to Google Maps - it works so well!
Time to explore the archipelago
I wake up pretty early, make some breakfast and shoot off. First is a tram into town, but I'm running fairly early, so decide to skip that and just walk.
Transport #1 - Legs... A short 10 minute walk into the city centre 🚶♂️
Transport #2 - The tram for a 30 minute journey out to the coast...
Transport #3 - The ferry, again for probably only 30 minutes, and that included stopping at a couple of islands along the way.
Whilst the majority of people sat inside in the warm (because they're sensible) I stood up on top deck and enjoyed the stunning scenery (and froze my tits off 😂)
Before long we were docking at Donso, one of the southern islands. I wasn't sure where to go... but the island isn't big and it looked as though there was a main road around the island, so figured that would be a pretty good shout.
Oh, and there's no cars out here... basically, everyone has golf buggies.
I start to wonder around this idyllic island...
And then I stumble across a sign which looks like it says vantage point, so off I go, exploring. Turns out there's a nature reserve, which takes you around the southern part of the island, in the most amazing scenery...
Starting to get hungry, I check out Google Maps and spy a couple of cafes. They're on Styrso, a neighbouring island. But there's a bridge across, so off I set.
And when I get there, there's two to choose from. I'm not gonna lie, neither of them look anything special from the outside...
but man, did the inside deliver!! One of the coolest cafes I've ever been to. Beautifully decorated and chilled music playing.
I go and sit down, the waiter comes over, and not wanting to be the typical English tourist I attempt to ask him, in Swedish, if he speaks English...
Hej, du pratar Engelska?
He stairs at me completely blankly... "English?" I say "Ah, yes... Of course" he replies... And then proceeds to speak almost perfect English, including translating the whole menu for me.
Well, at least I tried 😅
And I wouldn't normally do the foody shots... but i think this deserves some credit - it was bloody lovely!
Once finished, I had a short walk... all of 50 meters, to the harbour where I caught the returning ferry.
What an amazing day!
